Leimert Park

Leimert Park is the cultural heart of Black Los Angeles — a neighborhood that has hosted jazz, poetry, visual art, and community activism since the 1940s. The murals here are inseparable from that living cultural tradition: they appear on the walls of jazz clubs, gallery storefronts, and community centers, and they depict the artists, activists, and ancestors who made this village what it is.

Elliott Pinkney

Afrocentric muralist · Leimert Park, Los Angeles

Leimert Park-based artist and longtime village resident whose work documents the neighborhood's jazz and arts history across multiple decades. "The Village" is his most comprehensive work — a panoramic mural wrapping two walls at the corner of 43rd and Leimert depicting the artists, musicians, and community leaders who have defined the village's cultural life since the 1940s.

Jonas Never

Portrait muralist · Los Angeles

"Kobe" was completed one week after Kobe Bryant's death in January 2020, a portrait painted overnight as a spontaneous act of community mourning. In Leimert Park — the cultural center of Black LA — it immediately became a gathering place for residents who brought flowers, candles, and messages. Jonas Never painted it without a commission and donated the wall to the neighborhood.

Noni Olabisi

African American muralist · Los Angeles

"Pan African Sunrise" was commissioned for the 2019 Leimert Park Village Mural Project — a neighborhood initiative to fill available wall space with work by Black LA artists before rising rents drove studios and galleries out. The mural depicts an idealized African landscape populated by figures from Leimert Park history in the warm morning light of a Los Angeles sunrise.
